Heider Sadik and his wife, Atia, were renting a home with a collapsting roof and leaking walls when EFI found them. They were sharing this three-room structure with their five children. The family was in the process of beginning construction on a two-story house, which would provide the living space they needed for their family of seven.
Since the time we originally met the Sadiks, they were able to complete the shell of their home and begin to finish the inside. They completed 3 rooms first so the family could move into adequate shelter and save their funds by not paying rent. In October of 2010 EFI provided the family with a $5,000 loan to finish the ground floor of this six-room home. The funds will go towards block walls, windows, doors, electric supplies, stucco, tile and bathroom fixtures.
As EFI continues to grow and mature, we are able to realize more about the true impact of the work we are doing. As Heider began to understand how his loan payments would funnel back into EFI’s accounts so that we could help more families, he was able to grasp a new concept of community. He understood that these finances were not only used to help his family, but also used to help other families as they repay their loan. The cycle is a beautiful thing, and we are eager to continue speading this concept of helping one another in community.
