The evening of Sept. 5, 2009 marked Extended Family International’s inaugural Music for Malawa benefit concert. Nearly 125 members of the Harrisburg community came out to the Abbey Bar at the Appalachian Brewing Co. and helped us raise $1,500 at the door. The funds allowed us to complete our first loan for our first partner family, the Mahmouds. EFI’s board was encouraged and humbled by this outpouring of love and support.

Music for Malawa 2009 was sponsored by 3 generous Central Pennsylvania firms: Zimmerman Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Inc.; Provision Services Floor Care Specialist; and Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates Architects. Entertainment for the evening was provided FREE of charge by Johnny Action Figure, Driving Vegas (courtesy of Aftertouch Records) and Mitch Hood.

Event photos were contributed by the very talented Andy Link, Amy Spangler and Jeremy Long. Enjoy.

Plans for Music for Malawa 2010 are in the works. If you are interested in being a part of the event in any way, shape or form, please send an e-mail to events@extendedfamilyinternational.org.

Note: The term “malawa” is a Kurdish word that translates into English as “home.” Kurdish is the language spoken by those who live in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, which is where EFI began its work with our first partner family, the Mahmouds.
